about me

famously “not so bad once you get to know [me]”

my players have blamed me of being a narrative alchemist, but I suspect the ancient green dragon they were preparing to face may have had an influence on that praise. I will admit to liking the idea of forging meaning where dice meet discourse… may just have to write something about that.

equal parts academic and adventurer, I am fortunate to navigate the labyrinth of the learning sciences with a D20 in one hand and a growing list of citations in the other. committing scholarship in ludonarrative design allows me to study play and to live it. weaving TTRPGs as learnful ecologies brimming with learning affordances, I enjoy unlocking communicative magic in both formal classrooms and informal learning spaces.

I’m not content with my research sitting quietly on a shelf – it has to mean something. whether leading 500-hour actual play campaigns for research decoding player character journals and in-game interactions, or designing frugal, socially responsive learning models, I enjoy blending theory and praxis, hopefully with a semblance of finesse.

advocating for equitable, embodied, and deeply human learning experiences, I don’t merely ask what a game can teach – I explore what it means to learn through story. and that, dear reader, is a quest I find worth following.
